Below is an email received from Lauri Sojourner, Gravatt’s Executive Director. I urge you all to write in as she requests today!
~ Whitney Evans, Diocesan President
We have become aware of an application for an agricultural permit to build a new poultry farm and dispose of the manure on Dairy Road in Aiken County. By car this area is approximately six miles from Gravatt; however, as the crow flies, it is less than one and a half miles from Gravatt. You can read the permit application here.
I have concern over the potential for the proposed poultry farm to negatively impact Gravatt. Let me be clear that I do not know the ramifications of this poultry farm to Gravatt, but I believe a hearing is necessary in order to address the concerns related to odor, swimming water, and drinking water. Where DHEC receives at least 20 written comments on a proposed permit, a public meeting will be held.
Please consider submitting comments expressing dissent over this application, and please ask others to do so as well. Comments must be received in writing bySeptember 30
and should be sent to the attention of William P Chaplin, South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, Industrial, Agricultural, and Storm Water Permitting Division, Bureau of Water, 2600 Bull Street, Columbia, South Carolina 29201, telephone: 803-898-3532
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you for your continued support of Gravatt.
